Premium Garden Rooms & Offices — London & Cambridge
A garden room should feel like a natural extension of your home — warm in winter, cool in summer, calm, beautifully detailed and genuinely useful every day.
Chisel to Wood designs and hand-builds bespoke garden rooms and garden offices across Greater London and Cambridge, creating spaces for focused work, family time, creativity and quiet.
Every project starts with how you want to live: we translate your routine into thoughtful layouts, smart services and tactile materials that wear in, not out.
We plan discreetly around neighbours, access and parking; we manage groundwork, structure, electrics and fit-out; and we hand over a finished space that feels considered down to the last socket.
Why a bespoke garden room beats a kit
Kits are quick to price but slow to fit your life. A bespoke build delivers:
Working in London means tight access, close neighbours and high standards.
We operate across boroughs including Richmond, Wimbledon, Hampstead, Camden, Islington, Hammersmith & Fulham, Chelsea and Chiswick, sequencing deliveries and protecting surfaces to keep disruption minimal.
Designs consider overlooking, daylight, privacy and acoustics from day one.
We’re used to conservation sensitives, shared access routes and street-front deliveries; our teams are tidy, polite and quietly efficient.
In Cambridge and surrounding villages (Histon, Girton, Trumpington, Shelford, Sawston), clients often prioritise energy performance, natural finishes and calm interiors.
We specify breathable fabric build-ups, low-VOC coatings and high-performance glazing that makes small spaces feel generous.
We can tune solar gain, add soft acoustic absorption, and weave fitted furniture into the shell so the room stays uncluttered without a second thought.
Compact Solo Office (≈ 2.4–3.0m wide): built-in desk and storage wall; pin-board or acoustic panel; opening window for purge ventilation; IR panel or UFH.
Dual-Use Office Lounge (≈ 3.6–4.2m): big slider to the garden; sofa-bed for guests; media wall; slimline bookcase; option for shaded canopy.
Creative Studio (≈ 4–5m with height focus): rooflights for top light, task lighting grid, washable linings, reinforced floor for equipment.
Family “Anywhere Room” (≈ 5–6m): zone for homework/work calls, reading nook, concealed store, deck transition, external lighting scene.
Cladding options: Thermowood, larch, cedar or charred timber; composite on request; aluminium corners and trims.
Roofing: EPDM or standing-seam effect; integrated or discrete gutters; fall management; optional green roof (subject to structure).
Glazing: aluminium or timber/aluminium composite; sliders or French sets; trickle vents; solar control glass where needed.
Services: electrical circuits, LED lighting, external lights, data cabling; EV-ready conduit on request.
Heating & cooling: UFH (electric), infrared panels, compact air-to-air heat pumps, or simple convectors — sized to the fabric.
Interiors: plaster or timber linings, durable flooring (engineered wood or LVT), fitted storage, bench seating, cable management.
Planning & permissions (plain-English overview)
Many garden rooms fall under Permitted Development if they meet height, boundary and usage limits.
We advise early on:
Heights & boundaries: typical PD rules cap eaves/ridge heights with extra limits near boundaries.
Use & annexes: office/studio use is usually straightforward; sleeping accommodation or self-contained annexes may trigger more controls.
Conservation/listed contexts: design sensitivity and formal permissions may be required; we’ll help prepare drawings and handle dialogue.
Where Building Regulations apply (e.g., sleeping use, larger footprints, specific services), we coordinate with independent inspectors to ensure compliance is clear and stress-free.
Comfort you can feel (not just on paper)
We design for thermal continuity so surfaces stay close to room temperature — fewer cold spots, less condensation risk, a calmer feel.
We tune glazing for daylight without glare, use layered lighting (task, ambient, accent), and add subtle acoustic treatment so the room sounds as good as it looks.
Heating is right-sized to the envelope, avoiding the “toasty-then-cold” rollercoaster.
Sustainability & materials
Better performance lasts.
We select timber from responsible sources, detail for maintainability, and favour finishes that can be renewed, not replaced.
Breathable build-ups handle moisture safely; fixings and trims are chosen to weather honestly.
Where appropriate, we can integrate PV + battery, rainwater measures and recyclable interior finishes
