Bespoke Treehouses — London & Cambridge

A memorable treehouse blends wonder with reassurance

It should feel magical to climb into, perfectly placed among branches and birdsong; yet it should also feel solid, safe and weather-proof for years.

Chisel to Wood designs and builds bespoke treehouses across Greater London and Cambridge, combining arborist guidance, engineered structures, and child-safe detailing with the creativity that turns a sketch into a place your family (or guests) will never forget.

From playful adventure platforms and rope bridges to quiet reading rooms and elevated studios, we create timber structures that respect trees, neighbours and landscape — and that stay beautiful with time.

What we build (typologies you can mix and match)

    • Adventure Play Houses: Varied-height platforms, climbing nets, rope bridges, fireman’s poles, zip-line anchors (where safe), slides with safe run-outs, binocular perches and secret doors. Sightlines for supervising adults are designed in.
    • Reading Rooms & Studios: Insulated enclosures with controlled daylight, acoustic softness and compact heating so they’re cosy on winter afternoons. Perfect for homework, sketching, yoga or a quiet nap.
    • Multi-Platform Lookouts: Meandering terraces threaded between branches, with seating alcoves and viewing cut-outs. Ideal for larger trees, wildlife watching and sunset rituals.
    • Tree-Adjacent Stilt Houses: When direct fixing would stress the tree or breach policy, we float platforms on slender posts placed within the drip line, aligning floor heights with the canopy for the same elevated feeling.

    Our design principles

    • Tree health first: We work with independent arborists to assess species, health, load paths and protection zones. Where fixing to the tree is appropriate we use minimal, adjustable connections; where it isn’t, we build tree-adjacent on discreet posts to achieve the same canopy experience without harm.
    • Engineer the joy: Delight and safety are not opposites. We model spans, fixings, guarding and vibration so the treehouse feels rigid and reassuring even when kids are racing across a bridge.
    • Child-safe detailing: Non-slip decking, graspable rails, anti-trap balustrade spacing, secure latches placed above little hands, rounded arrises — details that quietly prevent accidents.
    • Weather resilience: Keep water out, let trapped moisture breathe out, shed and dry. We detail roofs, flashings, sills, ventilation and replaceable wear layers so the structure remains sound.
    • Calm aesthetics: Forms, openings and materials are chosen to sit gently in the canopy. Subtle colours and timber that silvers gracefully keep the treehouse part of the garden, not a billboard.

    London context (neighbours, access, conservation)

    • Boroughs such as Hampstead, Highgate, Richmond, Wimbledon, Islington, Camden, Hammersmith & Fulham, Chelsea and Chiswick demand careful site conduct.
    • We plan street-front deliveries, protect routes through houses or side passages, and sequence works to keep noise low and sites tidy.
    • Designs aim to avoid overlooking — we tune platform heights, orient windows, and use screening so your treehouse feels private without blocking light.
    • In conservation areas or close to listed settings, we propose quiet forms, warm timber claddings and soft night lighting that read as crafted, not intrusive.

Cambridge context (performance, tone, village edge)

In Cambridge city and villages like Histon, Girton, Trumpington, Shelford and Sawston, clients often favour natural materials and soft colour palettes that sit comfortably with established gardens and college-style landscapes.

We specify larch, cedar, Thermowood or charred timber with ventilated cavities, choose standing-seam effect or EPDM roofs with crisp edges, and tune insulation and ventilation so enclosed rooms feel calm, dry and temperate year-round.

Structure & materials (what makes it feel solid)

    • Support strategy: We combine tree-friendly fixings (only where appropriate) with independent posts so loads are predictable and growth movement is accommodated. Adjustable connectors allow fine tuning after weather cycles.
    • Decks & platforms: Structural joists with anti-slip, water-shedding top layers; concealed falls; ventilation beneath; drip edges that keep ends dry.
    • Enclosed rooms: Breathable wall/roof build-ups with continuous insulation, vapour control where needed, controlled fresh air and quiet heating options.
    • Roofs: EPDM or metal-effect membranes, fully flashed with generous eaves. Green roof possible on post-supported rooms (subject to structure and maintenance plan).
    • Cladding & trims: Timber rainscreens with insect mesh, robust corners and sills that throw water clear; colour-fast finishes or honest weathering to silver.
    • Glazing & doors: Safety glass, secure ironmongery, night-latch positions out of children’s reach, trickle ventilation and fly-screen options for summer.

Access & play elements (safe by design)

    • Stairs & ladders: Appropriate pitch with uniform rises; grippy treads; handrails sized for small hands; mid-landings on higher climbs.
    • Guarding & balustrades: Anti-climb spacing; rounded tops; infills that resist trapping; screen panels where overlooking is sensitive.
    • Slides, bridges, nets: Positioned with safe approach/landing geometry; net tension checked; bridge sway limited by design; anchor points inspected during handover.
    • Lighting: Warm, low-glare lighting for stairs and decks on timers or sensors; minimal spill into neighbouring plots and habitats.

Interiors & atmosphere (for rooms you’ll actually use)

Inside a treehouse, sound and light do the heavy lifting.

We balance glazing for leaf-filtered views with acoustic linings to quieten rain and wind.

Lighting is layered: ambient for mood, task for reading/drawing, accent to warm timber tones.

Finishes are touchable and robust — oiled timber, soft-board pin walls, wipeable paints in splash zones.

Storage nooks keep cushions, books and toys tidy; compact heaters or IR panels extend usage into colder months.

Services & options (only what you need)

    • Electrical: Discreet conduit runs, LED lighting scenes, USB-C outlets by reading seats, exterior stair/landing lights on sensors.
    • Data: If the treehouse doubles as a study, we can hard-wire a data run or specify a reliable point-to-point wireless link.
    • Heating: IR panels or compact convectors sized to the envelope; small stoves possible in suitable contexts with proper clearances and flues.
    • Audio: Low-profile speakers with neighbour-friendly limits; or simply great acoustics and quiet.
    • Water: For wash basins or tea points in enclosed rooms, we’ll set realistic options for supply and waste (site-dependent).

    Planning & permissions (plain-English)

    • Heights & viewpoints: Elevated platforms and rooms can trigger planning permission — especially near boundaries, in conservation areas or where overlooking may occur. We’ll advise the likely route and prepare drawings/visuals.
    • Arboricultural method: Where trees are protected or significant, we incorporate arborist reports and root protection zones into design and construction methodology.
    • Building Regulations: Open play platforms generally fall outside; enclosed insulated rooms with services can bring parts of the Regulations into scope. We coordinate with independent inspectors so compliance is clear, efficient and child-safe.

Installation & site conduct (tidy, neighbourly, discreet)

Treehouses are often built in tight back-garden conditions.

We map access, protect floors/fences, schedule deliveries for quiet times and maintain a clean site.

For London terraces we can prefabricate sub-assemblies to reduce on-site noise and duration.

We communicate daily, keep routes clear and leave gardens exactly as we found them — plus a little more magical.

    Sustainability (repair over replace)

We specify responsibly sourced timber, breathable assemblies, mechanical fixings that can be undone, and finishes that are renewable rather than disposable

Details are drawn to drain and dry so water doesn’t linger where it causes decay.

End-of-life is considered: separable layers and standard fixings keep future options open.

Maintenance & care (little and often)

    Timber outdoors thrives with attention.

We offer annual or bi-annual checks: tighten fixings, verify bridge/net tension, clear leaves from roofs and gutters, refresh oils where used and review any soft spots early.

You’ll receive a care schedule with simple intervals and the exact products we recommend.

    Pricing guidance (transparent ranges)

Every tree, brief and access route is unique, but typical bands help planning:

    • Adventure platforms & bridges: usually £12k–£25k, depending on height, features and access.
    • Enclosed reading room/studio: commonly £25k–£45k, driven by insulation, glazing and services.
    • Multi-platform / complex arboriculture: scoped case-by-case; we’ll propose phased options to match budget and tree capacity.

After survey and concept design we provide a fixed quotation with clear alternates (add/remove features, change cladding, upgrade guarding).

    Areas We Cover

London: Richmond, Wimbledon, Hampstead, Highgate, Islington, Camden, Hammersmith & Fulham, Chiswick, Chelsea and neighbouring districts.

Cambridge & villages: Cambridge city, Histon, Girton, Trumpington, Shelford, Sawston and surrounds.

If you’re slightly outside these, ask — we’re flexible where access and programme make sense.

FAQs – London  & Cambridge tree houses

Will fixing to the tree hurt it?

Not if it’s the right tree and we do it the right way. We involve an arborist, use minimal, adjustable fixings and, where fixing isn’t appropriate, build on posts beside the tree to achieve the same elevated experience.

Do treehouses need insulation and heating?

Open play platforms don’t. Enclosed rooms benefit from insulation, controlled ventilation and compact heating, which make them welcoming in winter and less stuffy in summer.

What about planning rules and neighbours?

We design for privacy and low visual impact and can handle planning applications where required, including visuals and neighbour-friendly lighting plans.

    How long does installation take?

After design and procurement, simple platforms can be a few days on site; enclosed rooms typically 1–2 weeks, dependent on access and weather. Prefabrication reduces noise and duration further.

Can you design for teenagers or adults, not just kids?

Absolutely — we regularly create quiet studios, yoga decks and sunset lookouts with furniture, lighting and services suited to grown-up use.
