Chisel to Wood designs and hand-builds premium timber buildings and log cabins for clients across London and Cambridge. From compact garden offices and creative studios to family cabins, saunas and treehouses, every structure is purpose-designed, fully insulated for year-round use, and installed by our own specialist team. We work to your brief, your site, and your budget — with craftsmanship that stands the test of time.
Building in London demands smart design and considerate installation. We regularly work in boroughs such as Richmond, Wandsworth, Hammersmith & Fulham, Camden, Islington, Hampstead and Wimbledon. Access can be tight, neighbours close, and schedules busy — so our process is tailored to city life: accurate surveying, modular build sequences, dust and noise control, and delivery planning to keep your project running smoothly.
Whether you’re after a sleek contemporary garden room in Chelsea or a warm timber cabin in Chiswick, we combine architectural detail with natural materials so your building feels integrated — not an afterthought.
Cambridge projects often focus on energy performance, natural materials and understated design. We deliver insulated year-round garden offices, family cabins, studios and annexes across Cambridge city and surrounding villages including Histon, Trumpington, Girton, Sawston and Shelford. Our cabins are engineered for longevity with robust sub-bases, careful moisture management and premium cladding that weathers beautifully.
If you’re working from home, adding flexible family space, or creating a rentable studio, we’ll design a cabin that’s comfortable in winter, cool in summer and genuinely useful every day.
We start by understanding how you’ll use the space — office, gym, playroom, therapy studio, guest room or multi-use. We discuss size, style, glazing, storage and services, and share examples and material palettes. From this we develop an initial concept plan and outline costs.
A site survey confirms boundaries, levels, access and services. We then refine floorplans, elevations, structure and specification. For London projects we factor in access sequencing and neighbour considerations; in Cambridge we often tune the build for performance and conservation context.
We prepare the sub-base (screw piles or concrete subject to ground conditions), install the insulated floor cassette, then raise the walls and roof using engineered timber. Windows and doors are fitted early for weather protection so internal trades can progress without delay.
Electrical, data and heating are first-fixed, insulation and vapour control layers applied, then internal linings, flooring and joinery installed. Externally we complete cladding, trims, roofing, gutters and decks. Finally we commission, snag and hand over.
Every Chisel to Wood building is custom. Typical inclusions and upgrades include:
Tell us how you want the space to feel — calm, minimalist, rustic, playful — and we’ll design the materials and lighting to match.
Many cabins are possible under Permitted Development if they meet size and position limits. Where planning is required (conservation areas, listed buildings, tight boundaries, or use as sleeping accommodation), we can help with drawings and coordinate applications. We advise early on ridge height, boundary offsets, and glazing positions to balance daylight with privacy.
For buildings intended as habitable annexes, we’ll align structure, insulation, ventilation and egress with relevant Building Regulations, and we can collaborate with independent inspectors where needed. In London, neighbourly planning is key: we plan delivery windows, protect surfaces, keep access tidy and communicate clearly throughout.
Because every cabin is bespoke, prices vary by size, specification and access. As a transparent guide:
We’ll provide a fixed quotation after survey and detailed design so you can proceed with confidence.

Greater London (including Richmond, Wimbledon, Chiswick, Hammersmith, Fulham, Hampstead, Camden, Islington, Chelsea and surrounding districts) and Cambridge (Cambridge city, Histon, Girton, Trumpington, Shelford and nearby villages). If you’re just outside these areas, get in touch — we can usually help.
Share a few details — the space you have, how you want to use it and any photos — and we’ll come back with an initial concept and guide pricing.
We can schedule a site visit in London or Cambridge and advise on planning, access and specification.
Yes. Our teams regularly work across both regions. We plan access, deliveries and neighbours carefully to keep projects smooth and respectful.
Absolutely. We design for year-round comfort with breathable build-ups, continuous insulation and quality glazing. Heating options include underfloor, infrared and compact heat pumps.
Many builds qualify under Permitted Development. Where planning is needed, we prepare drawings and can support applications. We’ll advise the best route at survey.
We select screw piles or reinforced concrete based on ground conditions, loads and access. Both create a stable, level base and protect the structure from ground moisture.
Most projects take 2–4 weeks on site after design and procurement, depending on size and spec. We sequence works to minimise disruption.
Yes — we design integrated desks, shelving, benches and hidden storage so the interior feels calm and uncluttered.
